Star Wars Plush

Every now and again I check on Heidi Kenney's My Paper Crane plushes. She is such a fantastic artist and she puts out so much stuff, so its hard to keep up with. I found this Star Wars plush she put in the Stitch Wars show at the Bear and the Bird Boutique and Gallery a while ago. I am SO impressed with this plush--its from the beginning of Empire Strikes back when Han has to put Luke's body in a Tauntaun to keep him warm to save his life. Han has to slice open the Tonka's body to save Luke, and all the Tonka's guts spill out...and it smells really bad. This is an amazing representation of this moment.

ALSO, I can't believe I came across a rad craft on the official Star Wars website. Its a Bantha plush! It's so weird and awesome that they have crafts on the Star Wars Website, and this one is extremely cool. There are a ton of other Star Wars crafts here including the Chewie Tissue Box Cozy, the Death Star Pinata and the Admiral Sackbar Puppet Craft..haha! This Bantha is my favorite!

I found this magnificent and bizarre toy called Geemo by Brooklyn Junior on the online designer marketplace called Supermarket. Here is the description on the toy's website, being that it's very hard to describe: "Geemo by Cas Holman, is a building block for the imagination. Geemo’s flexible magnetic limbs grab and repel each other in unpredictable ways. As Geemo comes to life in your hands, you can build, discover, create, and imagine with this new species of toy." Basically, this toy is really innovative and looks crazy awesome when it is put together. I also like the octagonal lunch box style packaging. Way to go! Also check out casholman.com. Wonder Rocket

I found this great Japanese store online, Wonder Rocket. The styles are so different from what I am used to seeing. Everything looks romantic and ultra comfy. I love the way that the pictures are styled. From a little research, this style is associated with Japanese Mori girls or Forest Girls, and Yuru-Nachu, which means relaxed-natural style. I think I definitely identify with the Forest Girls. Now, I wish I could figure out how to buy stuff off this website!

Topography Model

I finally got around to posting the pictures of my finished topography model. I am really proud of the end result. I can't even count how many hours this took me. I am guessing 50-100...maybe? Who knows. There was a lot of cutting and gluing involved. It started out as a model of the Mariana Trench, but its more of a topography tribute to the Mariana Trench. It was also used in the performance of Decline of Ballooning. Here are more pictures on my flickr.

I wish! Here is an article about the potentiality of bike highways in America. US state highway officials have approved the concept of a national Bicycle Routes Corridor Plan. Apparently, this doesn't mean much, though--that they will place more signs up that signal bike routes on roads. Hopefully though, this will stem into something better. I would love to go on a bike road trip!

Crochet Butterflies

Are you kidding? These are SO cool. I love them! From oeuf, these are hand crocheted alpaca butterflies you can buy in the display case. First off, I absolutely love old timey butterfly displays. I have a little one myself. These products are made by indigenous women in Bolivia, and the profits help these women give their children an education. I think these butterflies are genious and lovely. I'm going to save up for the big one!

I got this perfect corduroy Jacket for 2$, a JCPenney original. Look at the sweet label and lining.

It fits perfectly, because I'm pretty small, and jacket sizes back then were for a smaller lady.

Chicago Children's Museum

I just went to the Chicago Children's Museum at Navy Pier the other day, and it is truly every child's dream. The exhibits were mostly interactive. It is like they thought of every childhood fantasy and made it a reality. They had a room filled with sheets, pillows and chairs all for fort-making. They had a cave-like room where you could excavate dinasaur bones. A room that had a mini-Chicago. It seemed like every room was connected with play bridges and tunnels. There was a snowman decorating station. A life size chess set. A really neat art studio. One of my favorites was a giant play-boat. I wanted to play around in there. I recommend that anyone go check this museum out.

A Town Called Panic

Wow, this movie looks great. A Town Called Panic is a French stop-motion/claymation. The main characters are a horse, a cowboy and an indian. After watching the trailer, I think I already love it.

Islamic Sock

I'm not sure how I got to this on Wikipedia, but I think its pretty darn cool. This sock was probably found in Fustat, Egypt from the 12th century and was knitted in India. Here is info on how it was knitted. Man, those early knitters are talented! This sock sits at the Textile Museum in DC. I really want to check that place out.

Jimmy McBride Quilts

Log Cabin Quilt My Mom is making me found at Quiltology, below

I just came across quilts by Jimmy McBride. These quilts are different from anything I have seen. Jimmy uses elements of Sci Fi and Astronomy among other things and puts together chaotically beautiful pieces. On his blog he points out that he uses thrifted shirts for his fabric. He also includes a picture of the racks of his local thrift store...it looks far beyond any thrift store I have been to!! I'm jealous. I really wish I could get one of these quilts. Luckily, my Mom is making me a wonderful quilt I found the pattern for on Quiltology's wesite, picture included.

Another amazing artist I discovered this year at Renegade Holiday was Camille Canales. Camille does phenomenal textile art using embroidery, beading screen printing. She also does drawings. Her work is extremely intricate and beautiful. She must be extremely busy because in addition to her textile works, she also sells screen printed curtains, scarves and bags that are also very cute.

Smartfish Shoes

Last month I visited the Renegade Holiday Craft Fair in Chicago. There were definitely a few vendor gems I found that I'm really interested in sharing. Smartfish stood out to me. She makes her own shoes! First off, that is cool in itself. The shoes are extraordinarily eco-friendly. They are very simple ballet flats, which I love. I find it very difficult to find simple flat shoes for women that are comfortable and have a good shape. I am also a huge fan of TOMS! Here are some pictures of her shoes. I really hope her business takes off!

Hello! Happy New Years! My informal resolutions are to keep this blog updated regularly, and to do more work. Recently, I have been working hard on a topography project using felt. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. The project is a "model" of the topography of Mariana Trench, which is the deepest part of the ocean located in the Pacific near Japan and the Philippines. Although the topography is coming mostly from my imagination, is will be used to represent the Mariana Trench in an upcoming play. I have a lot more work to do on it, but here is what it looks like so far:

New Animation Blast!

In the last decade, I have been supremely disappointed in the quality of animation out there. There has been a lot of success for Pixar, and a lot of companies trying to get a cut of the digital animation market. Basically there has been a major lack of diversity. Recently, I have been so excited because there have been some really cool things out there exploring different mediums. Here are some that I am excited about with commentary!

CoralineWow! Coraline was so amazing! The animation was so interesting and modernized classic stop motion. If you do a little research on how it was made, you'll be amazed. Look at the set below!!! Coraline was adapted from a Neil Gaiman novel, which I didn't know when I saw it. This made up big time for the poor Gaiman adaptation of Mirrormask, which made me sad because it was a Henson company failure. Anyhow, Coraline story was unique and the images were fantastic.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

This is one movie I have yet to see, but I have pretty high expectations. I don't know whether I will like the actual content of the movie or not, but I am sure I will LOVE the stop motion they used. I am a huge fan of stop motion. It reminds me of my trips to the Field Museum and looking at all the taxidermy animals. They are kind of grotesque but the animals are beautiful. In this movie, they have tiny retro-preppy clothes and pajamas, which I must admit looks pretty neat. I have heard a lot of controversy about how involved Wes Anderson actually was with the stop motion aspect of this film; but overall, the stop motion team alone deserves a huge amount of credit for this.

Mary and Max

This animation style reminds me of the Wallace and Gromit animation, and trust me, its done well! I just saw Max and Mary and it was a beautiful film. I recommend it for everyone. Philip Seymore Hoffman does the voice of Max and he does an outstanding job! A lot of care was put into animating this film and it pays off. The colors and images set the tone for the film. Please see it! I cried.

Ponyo

Yay! Miyazaki makes another beautiful animated film. This tale was simple and delightful. I respect Miyazki so much because he will not budge from doing hand drawn animation. And in the end, it makes for a better story. You can tell he and his team have taken time to craft beautiful pictures which creates a provocative story. His work compares to the old days of Disney for me. He is so bold to keep doing what he is doing...and successful. Ponyo had some crazy characters. Its great!

Yo Gabba Gabba

This is not a movie, but a children's TV show. My obsession with this show runs deep. I think it is the answer to all the worlds problems! Haha! It does not use animation, but well designed costumes, which I think have been greatly missed ever since the hey-day of the Muppets. This show is just plain fun, and wildly creative. Its great for kids and adults. It also uses the great concept where toys turn into characters. The original Winnie the Pooh did wonders with that concept, and so does Yo Gabba Gabba.

Where the Wild Things Are

I put this last for a reason. I thought this movie was pretty bad, BUT I really do give it credit for the costumes they used. I thought most of them were lovely and majestic. Like I just said, I am happy that the use of costumes is coming back. My major problem with the costumes, though, is that the faces were digitally animated. This completely threw me off and angered me. I understand why the choice was made: to make the monsters more expressionistic. But, I thought the choice made the monsters look cheap and tacky. Overall, I commend the style of this movie, but unfortunately, I didn't really like it.

This weekend is Halloween, one of my favorite holidays. The only problem is, every year I plan on making an amazing elaborate costume, but don't, so I have to throw things together in a few days. Yesterday I was googling costumes for ideas and here are some favorites that I found! I think I am going to either be Alice in Wonderland using a nice vintage blue dress, or Pippi Longstocking, or Pippi Långstrump; which is the original Swedish name.

Paper Foldables.....they are brilliant! This guy, Bryan, designs all of these amazing foldable paper patterns that usually turn into an awesome weird person or object. The coolest thing that on his website you can download the pdf of all of his patterns, print the pattern and fold it yourself. I think I stumbled upon this website after discovering the IFC tv show, food party, which I obsessed over for quite a bit, and will post on soon. Anyhow, he made a food partyfoldable which is super neat. I was also blown away by the foldable typewriter he made to promote a novel by Christopher Hertz. I'm about to print one of these things out now and fold my own!

I just found this video from the Danish band Efterklang. They make beautiful eerie music and costumes to match the sound. I really enjoyed their performance and especially liked the stage design. The stage background includes numerous spikey mountains. It reminds me of a Kinderfluff mountain toy I use for display.

Oh my gosh, I just ran across Pilli Pilli....who does beautiful crochet work. I am in love with the colorful "scarflettes" she makes. A scarf with a little animal head on it...so darling! They remind me of an updated version of the mink furs that used to be popular. The minks are cute, but of course real fur makes me feel extremely bad and sad. I think I may have to make a major etsy splurge on one of these scarves. I haven't done that in awhile. Pilli also makes lovely pins and jewelry.

There's nothing I love more than tiny sweaters...I mean NOTHING! These are great because some of the sweaters are knitted into the doll. These guys are called Pogos, made by Pogo of course. I especially am mad about the photos. I know the maker probably didn't intend this, but to me they are hilarious and melodramatic. It looks like the Pogos all star in a Pogo remake of 90210. The first photo is so photo-shootey, it is my favorite. These Pogos rule!

WOW! I spent all day yesterday making these tiny sleeping bags to go with one of my monsters. Renegade Craft Fair is coming up this weekend, and of course I always put things off until the week before. I'm pretty proud that I finished 27 bags yesterday. Today I have been working on larger sleeping bags for the bigger monster of the same vein. Its hard to make them perfect, but I think that it is worth it in the end.

Romawinkel...I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. The illustrations remind me of the movie Wild Strawberries. Although the animals are exotic, I still feel like they belong in the French countryside. Particularly, I am interested in the baby bonnet...such an odd display. Monster Skin Chair

WOW! My friend sent me this stuff by Joshua Ben Longo, who has an impressive body of plush work that spans nine years. His characters are highly imaginative and often hint at the grotesque. Josh has made so many great plush and its truly impressive because they are fantastically well made! The Monster Skin Chair rules! There were so many pictures to choose from, I had to put quite a few up. Its actually nice to see some plush that isn't so "cute". He calls the sum of his work Longoland, you can even buy a few of his items here. And no wonder his work is so good, I checked out his blog, and he has fabulous sketches he works from. I think the monsters from Longoland would probably skin and eat the Kinderfluff crew.

Fish Boy!

Lou Lou & Oscar is a talented plush maker from England. She makes the superb Fish Boy! Fish boy is a wonderful creature. I love the stitch work, which creates interesting textures. She also seems to use an icey-aquatic color palette. For me, her work evokes a silent, otherworldly feel. I found these Star Wars inspired Fish Boy plush, SO cool!

My Plush Roller Skate!

I am so excited I finally finished my latest project, my plush roller skate! I love the final results, the skate even fits on my foot. People keep asking if it really works, sadly it does not. Anyhow, the felt would wear away in a minute if I skated on it!!! I love roller skates and have been casually looking for an awesome vintage pair that fits me. I am reminded of a rad scene in the Great Muppet Caper where Miss Piggy's purse is stolen and she borrows someone's retro roller skates to chase after the thief.... Its so good!!!

DJ Klock- Theme

I found this felt video on the blog My Love for You is a Stampede of Horses. The video was done by artist Kenji Harata. I love when felt is layered, this is something I have been playing around with on my plush. The texture and thickness of felt creates a soft tactile image. Even when there is a pile of felt scraps, it makes a unique image. Kenji has made a wonderful video with eye-popping colors and shapes!

I just discovered the wonderful work of Aurelie Mathigot. Aurelie is a French artist, and I luckily discovered her while browsing through a French magazine at Borders this morning. He crochet work is skillful and beautiful. Aurelie masterfully makes plush crochet of everday items and food. She also creates crochet sheaths for bottles and balls. Her work is very light and delicate, and reminds me of a warm place. My favorite is the set of fast food items. I love the container the hamburger rests in!!!

Recently, or not so recently (I'm not sure) Denny's released a commercial for their Grand Slam Breakfast featuring the innovative Nannerpuss character. It looks like Denny's tried to portray a gay french banana that loves pancakes. Nannerpuss to me is pretty delightful, especially when the xylophone chimes and Nanner lifts up his peels in the commercial. It seems that the craft community has taken a grand liking to Nannerpuss. I have seen multiple items representing this cute little fellow. Thanks to Yummy Pancake, we have a great Nannerpuss plush.

This weekend I stayed in a cabin by Lake Michigan... so beautiful!!!!! I was lucky enough to be on a lovely bluff overlooking the lake. There was wildlife everywhere... and I saw the cutest snapping turtle crossing the road. I looked for some plush that related to my vacation, and I found some great things by Weird Bug Lady. Her terrarium is an especially awesome idea! I also don't see anyone making fossil plush. Good stuff.

The band Boy Least Likely To made this video for their song When Life Gives Me Lemons I Make Lemonade. The song is so insanely cutesy its almost sickening; nevertheless, its pretty alright. I think this video must have been made by the etsy folk because its got craft written all over it: denim walls, wicker hills, cotton ball clouds....or maybe a few five-year-olds got together before their afternoon nap to make this. The main guy is a some kind of puppy-bird hybrid that flys with its ears, or maybe its just supposed to be a weird bird....but I like puppy-bird better. I can't deny that I like the happy apple companion and sour lemon foe. Anyhow, this is plush inspired, so thats pretty cool.

Ninon

I can't get over how great all of Ninon's work is! Ninon is Italian and lives in Berlin. In her blog, she has beautiful pictures of the city and the country which she visits. I can tell her exposure to different landscapes reflect in her work. Her pieces remind me of fairy tales that take place in old villages surrounded by nature. I think of Little Red Riding Hood and Pinnochio. Her work seems like it has a story to tell, which is a unique quality.

This weeks plush of the week is from Laura Granlund of Intimidnation. Laura is a fellow Chicagoan, and makes awesome plush! I believe her most famous plush is a knome named Mr. Beardsley. I LOVE Gronspel the Worry Wart. He is ultra cute...I love the color combos and the big Freckles. Gronspel pulls on his tongue when he worries...rad.

Whoa, wow, whoa, crazy...this crafter, Becky Stern, has made all sorts of crazy things. These are a few of her plush projects. A robotic scorpion is a sweet idea. But glowing steaks...this is the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life...I can't believe it! The plush knee project came after Becky dislocated her knee. Its gruesomely rad. She appropriately uses the name Sternlab.

Toy Drop

Finally spring is here! YES!!!! The cold weather in Chicago was driving me mad!!! I feel like its the perfect time to write about this RAD idea, the Toy Society's Toy Drops. The Toy Society began in Australia, and now has spread throughout the world. Someone leaves a toy in a baggie in a random place, with a note attached saying who it is from. From there, a lucky finder gets to keep the toy. Now, anyone from around the world can sign up to make a toy and drop it, I think I'm going to have to do this soon. Who wouldn't love finding an awesome toy?!

Chupacabra...I'm Obsessed!!!!

I found this plush, the Chupacabra at Renegade Craft Fair this summer. These are done by Christina Ward. The Chupacabra is a "legendary cryptid", meaning that there have been sightings, but there is no proof this thing exists. I for one, love a good dose of cryptozoology, and am convinced that the Chupacabra exists. If it looks anything like Christina's toy, I would would want one as a pet, but apparently the Chupa drinks blood, so maybe I should just buy her plush. Regardless of what the Chupa actually looks like, I think Christina's interpretation is spectacular, and really well made. Maybe I'll watch Chupacabra Terror tonight....

Felting Rules!

I have always been interested in felting, but have never tried it. It seems so intricate, so I can only assume it takes a lot of talent to do it really well. I found this amazing artist KaysK9s that makes felted dogs and cats based off images of people's pets. These things are SO realistic and extremely cute! These head keychains are weird and rad. I would love to get my kittens felted by her!

Protobolster

Recently, I found a blog chronicling a project called Protobolster. Although this was almost a year ago, I thought it was worth a mention. These guys are all made of recycled upholstery and stuffed with plant fiber. This fellow, Richard, made 25 Protobolsters for an installation. I'm pretty mesmerized by this strange stumpy pig-like figure. They look lovely all in a line together. He also found some great fabrics. Also found some interesting embroidery projects on Richard's blog, Historically Inaccurate.

I am going to start a weekly post where I show my favorite PLUSH OF THE WEEK!!!! Its extremely hard to choose, because I come across so many amazing plush. For the first official Plush of the Week, I have chosen Mummysam's Mr. Fox. This plush is so great! I love the detail around the fur, eyes and sweater. Also, the coloring is perfect. I want to hang out with Mr. Fox in a log cabin and play scrabble...that sounds fun. I also found so many great characters in Mummysam's Etsy Shop.

Kinderfluff Paddle Boat

Today I worked most of the day on plush. I am a freelancer, and I haven't had a lot of work lately, so I am trying to devote time to sewing. Right now, I am trying to make a Kinderfluff world, with not only characters, but also landscapes, and accessories, and places for the characters to live in. I just finished my Kinderfluff Paddle boat. I finished it while watching Revenge of the Nerds...which rules! I eventually want to make plushes of all the characters. I attribute the success of the boat to the movie.

Cooper the Kinderfluff Owl and Felt Suits

This is Cooper the Kinderfluff owl. I have just finished him and now he is posted on my Etsy. He is second one I have made, the first was sold at the Renegade Holiday Sale. I'm pretty sure that one is an office mascot now....thats cool with me. This one takes a long time to make, especially cutting out all the little felt feathers, but I love the way it turned out! I also have decided I like making toys out of multiple fabrics...sometimes I get stuck in a felt rut, but felt is always a great medium. I would really like to make a felt suit. I saw this one at the MCA Chicago, which is pretty great, but I want to make one with a little more color. This one is done by Joseph Beuys.

Hello! This is the first post of my new Kinderfluff blog. To introduce myself: My name is Jill, and I make plush toys called Kinderfluff. I am based out of Chicago, IL.
