Topography Model

I finally got around to posting the pictures of my finished topography model. I am really proud of the end result. I can't even count how many hours this took me. I am guessing 50-100...maybe? Who knows. There was a lot of cutting and gluing involved. It started out as a model of the Mariana Trench, but its more of a topography tribute to the Mariana Trench. It was also used in the performance of Decline of Ballooning. Here are more pictures on my flickr.

Topography

Hello! Happy New Years! My informal resolutions are to keep this blog updated regularly, and to do more work. Recently, I have been working hard on a topography project using felt. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. The project is a "model" of the topography of Mariana Trench, which is the deepest part of the ocean located in the Pacific near Japan and the Philippines. Although the topography is coming mostly from my imagination, is will be used to represent the Mariana Trench in an upcoming play. I have a lot more work to do on it, but here is what it looks like so far:

Felt Video

DJ Klock- Theme

I found this felt video on the blog My Love for You is a Stampede of Horses. The video was done by artist Kenji Harata. I love when felt is layered, this is something I have been playing around with on my plush. The texture and thickness of felt creates a soft tactile image. Even when there is a pile of felt scraps, it makes a unique image. Kenji has made a wonderful video with eye-popping colors and shapes!

Felting Rules!

I have always been interested in felting, but have never tried it. It seems so intricate, so I can only assume it takes a lot of talent to do it really well. I found this amazing artist KaysK9s that makes felted dogs and cats based off images of people's pets. These things are SO realistic and extremely cute! These head keychains are weird and rad. I would love to get my kittens felted by her!

Cooper the Kinderfluff Owl and Felt Suits

This is Cooper the Kinderfluff owl. I have just finished him and now he is posted on my Etsy. He is second one I have made, the first was sold at the Renegade Holiday Sale. I'm pretty sure that one is an office mascot now....thats cool with me. This one takes a long time to make, especially cutting out all the little felt feathers, but I love the way it turned out! I also have decided I like making toys out of multiple fabrics...sometimes I get stuck in a felt rut, but felt is always a great medium. I would really like to make a felt suit. I saw this one at the MCA Chicago, which is pretty great, but I want to make one with a little more color. This one is done by Joseph Beuys.
